Devil’s Food White-Out Cake
When I showed my copy of Baking from My Home to Yours to my friend, Doretta, she took one look at the cover and said, “I want that cake!” I told her she’d have to wait for her bithday. That was in May. She had completely forgotten about it until I showed up at lunch with it – then, she threatened to cry!
I loved making this cake. The cake itself is “magically delicious”! And the frosting really took me out of my comfort zone – I’d never made anything like it, but I’ve come to trust Dorie Greenspan because she gives very clear instructions. I was anxious about pouring boiling sugar water into whipped egg whites, but it all came together into a wonderful marshmallow frosting! It turned out great! I would absolutely make this cake again – even before Doretta’s next birthday!
Baking has been my passion since ever since I had a Betty Crocker Easy-Bake Oven. Every time I make a recipe from this cookbook, I learn something new. I know how many times I’ve told you how much I love this cookbook, but it really is my favorite.

I just read a quote from a pastry chef (unfortunately, I can’t remember which one) who said the best thing about being a pastry chef at a fancy restaurant is that everyone is nice to you 364 days of the year because on the 365th day, they want you to make them a birthday cake!
