Cooking the chocolate pudding
This week's Baked Sunday Mornings challenge is for Sunday Night Cake. It's a light cake, with a soft crumb, that's made with sour cream and a touch of cinnamon! And topped with chocolate pudding! It comes together quickly and easily.
Whipping in the butter
The frosting takes a little time but is not at all difficult and so worth it! It tastes exactly like the signature Chocolate Pudding at the Hominy Grill in Charleston - so chocolaty and rich! You really could eat it on its own, but it is lovely draped over this delicate cake. I can think of so many ways to use this frosting - heartier than Ganache and less sweet than Buttercream - it's just right!

A perfect winter day in Malibu

What a scrumptious cake and your photo of Malibu is simply gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYour perfect day in Malibu makes me jealous...we are "enjoying" drizzling and sometimes hard rain...expect 4 days of this before our sun returns. I know...we need it. But it gives a good reason to stay home and bake. Your description of the frosting is perfect. It was all our favorite part. The cake is OK...simple as described, but the frosting is outstanding! Your photos are lovely, as always. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteThis cake reminds me of a recipe I have from the 80´s where a yellow cake from a box was poked and the pudding (also from a box) seeped into it. Love the homemade version Susan!
ReplyDeleteI want to sit on that hillside overlooking the coast and eat a piece of your delicious cake, YUM! It snowed in Raleigh over the weekend!
ReplyDeleteThe cake sounds just lovely!
ReplyDeleteLooks great - Wonder why it's called Sunday Night Cake :-)
ReplyDeleteLove your picture of Malibu! I used to bike up there when I lived on the West Coast. No place quite like it in the world. I loved the chocolate topping too, thought it was the best part of the recipe! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYour cake looks scrumptious! I MISS Malibu!! I used to live there and still have family there ( wish I was there now!)
ReplyDeleteI like the name of the cake, too. I love the idea of sour cream and cinnamon and chocolate all together.
ReplyDeleteWow! I love the pic of your cake with the frosting flowing over the edges. That's awesome. I liked the way the frosting came together (as I watched hubbie making it).
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cake and a beautiful winter day. Loving the west coast weather.
ReplyDeleteYour frosting is so dark and creamy! Yum.
ReplyDeleteI want to know how everyone kept their frosting so pudding-like---? I added the butter and it thickened right up to spreading consistency. Weird. This looks great, Susan!
ReplyDeleteI loved the frosting too! Your cake looks perfectly delicious!
ReplyDeleteI whipped my frosting up to be thicker, but yours looks so luxurious! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThis type of cake takes me back to my youth - always my favorite as a kid. A yellow cake with lots of chocolate frosting. Yum! By the way, I just noticed you are in Oxnard and our first Sunday shipment of your wonderful Oxnard strawberries made it to our farmers market yesterday! Spring has sprung! ~ David
ReplyDeleteThis is one luscious looking cake Susan;-)Love the weather and the blue skies down your way!
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by this frosting! My auntie used to make cakes like this all the time. Her kitchen would always have some sitting out inviting to be eaten even though my mom would try to forbid it.
ReplyDeleteA perfect winter day in Malibu made even more divine with that chocolate cake. Goodness Gracious I just want to swipe my finger through that rich chocolatey frosting. We are enjoying a breezy winter down here...we all know to relish these days before the humidity shows up for the summer.
ReplyDeleteReading your post really makes me want to make that "frosting"! Your cake looks delicious!
